They sit with Orla's arm draped around Rook's chest, and he has a hand on her arm, holding her there, relaxed and calm by now, a little sad. Orlas asks, “You don’t miss your parents?”
Rook says, ”No. I was inconveniently strange, and their answer was to send me away where I could be somebody else’s problem for the rest of my life.” He pauses, then adds, “What about your family? Where are they?”
“My sisters and brothers are… some of them are still living in the oceans. Some of them have had children already.”
Teasing a little, “You make having children sound like a death sentence.”
“For… my people, it is. It’s just the way that we’re made. After mating, the boys do not last long at all, and the women mind the eggs until they hatch. Without eating, or sleeping- it’s an instinct. And the way it is done. If I’d mated and had children, I would not be here still.”
Rook sits up, looking alarmed. “When you told me you didn’t want… but that’s awful!”
Orla does not look horrified, just slightly sad. “My people are not made the same as your people. But I do not follow my people’s ways. They call me selfish, for not wanting that fate. For not giving my life to spread children across the oceans.”
Rook looks at Orla, their faces close together, “Then let me be selfish with you. I’d rather have you here.”
“But you belong on your ship.”
“I wish I could take you with me.”
