In the foreground, Orla swims in a dark sea, carrying a small net bag. In the distance, some mer-being is resting in the water, a very long thin sliver leading down into the dark. Narration:
Sister Gerlinde is old, maybe older than anyone else I’ve ever known, unless you count the Currents themselves, and they are ageless. When I left my kin, I knew there would never again be a nest or a family for me. I am selfish, and I won’t give my life to make young. I am kind, and I won’t take a male’s life to make young. And that makes me alone.

But alone is hard, even for someone who likes solitude. I used to talk to the darkwater fish close to the sea bed, but they speak only of their own tiny lights. I talked to the shellfish, but they were only interested in carrion. I talked to the sharks, but...well, a shark is a brilliant conversationalist, actually, but only until they decide it’s time to devour you.

Sister Gerlinde talks of everything, and everything I know I learned from her, at least until Rook came along and began to tell me about land things. There are so many things I could teach him, too, but they all live here, in the deeps.
